Really?

Today the President of Mexico said in the same speech that drugs are not really so bad, and that if drugs were legal, such a move would be "suicidal" for Mexican society. Wow, Really?

1st, the "not so bad" part. The Mexican Government has decided that they will decriminalize possession of small amounts of drugs. We are not just talking pot here, which any sane person will agree is no threat, but some very hard, and addictive drugs such as heroin, and every lawmaker's favorite, meth-amphetamine. The idea is that the decrim will help stop the turning of cops into blackmailing thugs. Before this law, cops had broad discretion on how to handle simple possession cases. This led, as you may have guessed, to corruption on the part of the police. So far so good! Makes a ton of sense...but wait... Won't society be poisoned by all the quasi legal drugies running around out of control? Evidently not. Because this isn't really "legalizing" it but only "decriminalizing" it.

The theory gets a little fuzzy here....but my understanding is that the meth fiends and junkies will realize the fine point of law here, and tone down the anarchy?? Anyhooo...

Now let's examine the idea that legalizing drugs will poison society. Nonsense!

There has really only been one society in the west that has even given the idea of total decriminalization a serious try. The experiment was a complete success for society, and for some strange reason, we never hear about this experiment in the mainstream American media.

The country in question is Portugal. The results are nothing short of phenomenal in ever way. I will not try to beat any drums here, but just suggest that you google "portuguese drug policy".

This entire border war and killing spreee going on in Mexico currently would appear to be a direct result of the so called "War on Drugs". The same result occured during alcohol porhibition, with gangs controlling booze across the border. Is it that we don't learn very well? Isn't this kind of poisoning society?

... And finally, why are we given hope by each new President, Barack only being the latesdt in a long line, only to have our wish for this maddness to end, shattered on the rocks of the almighty buck. We are hooked on this drug war worse than any junky is hooked on heroin.
